RESOLVED, That the 2013 Assembly of the Episcopal Urban Caucus approve the addition of Rev Peter Williams Cassey to the Holy Women, Holy Men Liturgical Calendar of The Episcopal Church.And be further resolved that our approval is recognized and this resolution for approve the addition of Rev Peter Williams Cassey to the Holy Women, Holy Men Liturgical Calendar of The Episcopal Church is submitted to the next General Convention of the Episcopal Church.
EXPLANATION: Rev Peter Williams Cassey, ordained deacon in 1866, was the first African American clergyperson ordained west of the Mississippi. Rev Cassey and his wife Annie were founders of Christ Church San Francisco, and Trinity Church San Jose. At a time when the public education was limited to whites the Cassey’s founded The Phoenixian Institute for the education of children of colour in San Jose. Rev Cassey served The Episcopal Church in New Bern, NC, Fernandian, Jacksonville, and St Augustine’s FL, before his death on 16 April 1917. Rev Cassey was a dedicated preacher of the Gospel and leading supporter of the rights of all people in a time of institutionalized racism against people of colour in the United States.
